Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a nonsurgical treatment that uses the neurotoxic protein botulinum toxin to treat and prevent deep lines and wrinkles. When injected directly into a muscle, Botox temporarily freezes it and prevents it from contracting.

This relaxes the skin on top of the injected muscle. Because your muscle can’t contract, the skin on top of it won’t crease or wrinkle, making Botox an ideal treatment for relaxing and preventing facial lines and creases.

What can Botox treat?

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, those that form from repeated muscle movement. It can’t treat static wrinkles, which develop from volume loss. To treat volume loss, Dr. Willis recommends injectable fillers.

Botox may be the right nonsurgical treatment for you if you struggle with:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Bunny lines
  • Under-eye lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Wrinkles between your eyebrows
  • A gummy smile
  • Chin dimples
  • Lip lines

Along with treating wrinkles, Botox is also an effective treatment for sweating, bruxism (teeth grinding), and lifting sagging eyebrows.

What happens during Botox?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Willis, he assesses your facial structure to determine the best injection sites. At your next visit, he uses a local anesthetic to numb your skin and make you feel comfortable before performing your injections at the predetermined sites.

How many injections you need depends on many different factors, including the location and severity of the wrinkles you want to be treated.

What happens after Botox?

You shouldn’t rub your skin at the injection site for at least 24 hours after receiving Botox. Minor swelling, bruising, pain, and discomfort are normal side effects that should subside within hours of your injection.

You’ll typically see the effects of Botox within 1-3 days of treatment, and your results can last anywhere from 3-6 months.

While Botox gradually wears off over time, this quick, painless treatment is minimally invasive enough that you can return for maintenance treatments to maintain your results.

If you want to reduce wrinkles without invasive surgery, Botox may be the right treatment for you. Call New England Laser Lipo or book an appointment online today to schedule a Botox consultation.
