What is Smart Lipo?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Smart Lipo or Laser Lipo, which uses a laser to permanently destroy and diminish fat cells, is a minimally invasive procedure performed in the doctor’s office. There are many benefits to this FDA approved body contouring procedure.

Benefits to Smart Lipo over traditional liposuction are that it can be done under local anesthesia, it is much less painful and produces minimal bruising and bleeding. It can increase skin tightening by up to 70% and vastly improves the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite. Smart Lipo is a permanent solution. It is performed on most areas of the body, but traditionally done on small areas such as the neck, face, arms, abdomen, back, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. Since Smart Lipo does not require any drains or stitches, there is a much shorter recovery period than with traditional liposuction.

During the procedure, a small tube or cannula is inserted into the skin. This tube is where the laser will be introduced. The doctor then moves the cannula back and forth, sending the laser energy directly to the fat cells causing them to pop, becoming a liquid substance. The fat melts and the laser stimulates collagen production, tightening tissues and giving a firm appearance. The cannula is very small, allowing the procedure to be done under local anesthesia. Small blood vessels coagulate immediately upon contact, resulting in less bleeding and swelling.

After three months, the patient can expect almost normal skin. Insertion points would be hard to find. The healing-tissues of the skin cause it to contract, replacing the melted fat.

Smart Lipo is a good choice for people who have decided not to commit to traditional liposuction and wish to see immediate results. It is best for small areas, rather than large. It usually takes one hour per session. Most patients, though somewhat sore, are able to go back to work the next day. Complications with Smart Lipo are rare due to the fact that it is done under local anesthesia and there is less bleeding.
