Traditional Lipo vs. Laser Liposuction

Friday, December 13th, 2013

People thinking about getting liposuction might start researching the procedure and discover there are many options. Not being doctors, they may wonder which option is best for them.

Liposuction has been popular since the 1980s. That doesn’t mean it’s old-fashioned, but there certainly have been advances in the field. Two common choices are traditional lipo and laser liposuction. Both options allow plastic surgeons to target and remove fat in problem areas. However, the approach and the recovery are different.

Traditional Liposuction
With traditional liposuction, plastic surgeons suction out fat in target areas. They use hollow tubes which they use to prod and loosen fat cells. While this method does reduce fatty deposits, it necessitates making several incisions. Traditional liposuction often requires inpatient treatment, and doctors usually administer general anesthesia. Patients experience bleeding, bruising, swelling and numbness. They often feel significant discomfort after the procedure, requiring longer recuperation periods. However, it is the appropriate approach in certain circumstances.

Laser Liposuction
With laser liposuction, plastic surgeons use lasers to liquefy the fat first. Once the fat is liquefied, it is easier to suction out. Additionally, the lasers stimulate the production of collagen. Therefore a side benefit of laser liposuction is that skin becomes naturally tighter. Additionally the lasers constrict the capillaries, which results in less surgical blood loss. Patients also suffer less from bruising this way. Doctors typically use local anesthesia, which results in less downtime after surgery.

Which is Right for You?
Prior to getting liposuction, you should talk to your plastic surgeon. Your plastic surgeon will go over the options with you. While laser liposuction has several benefits, it may not be appropriate for everyone. For instance, people with loose skin or needing large amounts of fat removed often respond better to traditional lipo.

New England Laser Lipo in Massachusetts offers top-notch liposuction services. They serve patients primarily in Worcester and Shrewsbury. These experts offer minimally invasive procedures for their patients’ comfort. And, if they don’t offer a treatment that will help you get the look you want, they’ll happily refer you to the best doctors around who can. Most importantly, though, they’ll make sure you have the most up-to-date information for understanding any procedure.
