How to Get Rid of Wrinkles

As we get older, our skin loses some of its elasticity, resulting in wrinkles and lost volume or “plumpness.” Everyone wants to have smooth, youthful skin, which is why Dr. Paul Willis, a cosmetic doctor in Shrewsbury, MA, offers several minimally-invasive, effective treatments to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Why Do We Get Wrinkles?

Our skin naturally produces collagen, which supports skin’s elasticity and volume and gives it a smooth appearance. As we age, we produce less of this valuable protein, and skin slowly develops wrinkles, fine lines, and can have an almost deflated appearance.

There is nothing wrong with having wrinkles, but many patients seek cosmetic treatment to restore a more youthful appearance. Some treatments are designed to work directly with the muscles in the area to be treated, while others work to restore collagen production. Dr. Willis can work with you to determine the best course of action based on your cosmetic goals.

How to Reduce the Appearance of Wrinkles

Botox®

Botox is an injection that paralyzes certain muscles in the face, reducing the appearance of fine lines. Many patients keep these benefits for several months, though this can change depending on how your body processes the injection.

Juvederm®

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler from the makers of Botox. Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, is one of the latest advancements in filler technology and has become a favored compound for restoring volume and fullness to the face.

Radiesse®

If you have used hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm in the past, you may want to try Radiesse for longer lasting correction. Radiesse utilizes calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres to stimulate collagen production in problems areas of the face. The microspheres form a scaffold through which your own body’s collagen can grow, making it the ideal choice for facial shaping and contouring.

Belotero Balance®

Belotero Balance can be used to target deep facial folds around the nose and mouth as well as fine lines around the lips. Like other hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, Belotero Balance works by restoring volume to the face, smoothing away wrinkles and facial folds.

Are Cosmetic Procedures Safe?

One of the most frequently asked questions about cosmetic procedures is whether they’re safe. This is absolutely a valid concern, as there are risks with any procedure. Fortunately, thanks to technological advances over the past several decades, cosmetic procedures are becoming more and more minimally-invasive and safe for more people. New England Laser Lipo in Shrewsbury, MA offers a variety of safe and effective cosmetic treatments to help you look and feel your best.

Types of Cosmetic Procedures

  • Botox®: Of all of the types of cosmetic procedures, Botox is the most commonly-asked-about service we offer. Botox is designed to target “frown lines” – those wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and between the eyebrows.
  • Laser Liposuction: Smartlipo uses innovative laser technology to liquefy and destroy fat cells. The laser has the added benefit of tightening the skin for much smoother results than traditional liposuction. Most patients see skin tightening up to 70% and Smartlipo can also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Are Cosmetic Procedures Safe?

Botox is a common procedure and is performed on millions of patients every year. The botulinum toxin is in such a low dose and in a controlled area that does not negatively impact health. You should always see a board certified physician to administer Botox to ensure your safety and positive results.

Laser liposuction is one of the most sought-after body sculpting treatments, and rightly so. It provides smoother, tighter skin as compared to traditional liposuction, and it does not require an incision. Our physicians are certified in emergency medicine, giving them a unique perspective on how the body heals and improves over time.

The Pros and Cons of Botox

Botox is a popular treatment that can help you refresh and refine your look by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When properly administered, Botox can take years off a patient’s appearance and enhance natural features. As with all cosmetic treatments, there are pros and cons you should consider. Dr. Paul Willis at New England Laser Lipo meets with patients in his Shrewsbury, MA med spa to understand their specific goals and needs.

What Are Your Goals With Botox?

Before you meet Dr. Willis, take some time to consider what your goals are. There are many reasons people want Botox. Are you looking to improve your appearance by reducing fine lines and wrinkles? Do you have a pre-existing medical condition that may benefit from Botox treatment? When you know what you’re looking to get out of treatment, Dr. Willis can make sure to cater your plan to your goals.

The Pros and Cons of Botox

Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in the face, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Many patients keep these benefits for several months, though this can change depending on how your body processes the injection.

Botox has several benefits:

  • Most patients feel very minimal pain, and in many cases, none at all. You can return to your normal day without down time.
  • Botox can be used even in delicate areas such as around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Botox is an FDA-approved treatment.

There are also a few reasons why you may consider another cosmetic treatment besides Botox:

  • The results last around six to eight months, so you’ll need to return to your doctor for additional treatment.
  • If not done properly, you risk having a “frozen” appearance. Dr. Willis is experienced and highly trained, so your risk is low.
  • Botox does not help sagging skin or deep wrinkles. There are other treatments that can address this, but Botox is for more fine lines and wrinkles.

3 Benefits of Laser Liposuction

laser assisted lipo new england laser lipoSometimes, diet and exercise aren’t enough to get rid of stubborn body fat. Traditionally, invasive procedures like liposuction have been used to remove fat from the thighs, abdomen, and other areas. New technologies are available, and New England Laser Lipo specializes in a non-invasive, cutting-edge technology called laser lipo to remove fat from the body without surgery.

No Surgery Necessary

Traditional liposuction requires surgery to remove fat cells, but laser liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure. It’s performed under local anesthesia because only a small incision is made, and most people can return to work in 3-4 days, though results may vary among patients.

Laser-assisted lipo uses the addition of laser energy waves. These low-level waves focus on the treatment area. The laser penetrates the skin and weakens the walls of the fat cells allowing the fat to be more easily removed.  Through a tiny incision, a small cannula will be inserted under the skin to suck out the melted fat. The laser allows for less discomfort, minimal bruising and swelling and superior results compared to traditional liposuction.

Reduces Sagging Skin

Laser liposuction promotes collagen production, which is a protein found in the skin that helps skin appear tighter. With the traditional liposuction procedure, some sagging skin may be left behind when the fat cells are liquefied and removed. Patients who have laser liposuction will notice more sculpted, toned areas and a more contoured appearance.

Quick Recovery and Lower Risk

Because laser liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure, the recovery time is significantly reduced. Most patients are able to return to work in a few days, and the procedure is performed in our office where you will be able to leave the same day. There is also less swelling and bruising in the area.

Laser liposuction has less risk of infection because the incision is only 1-2 millimeters. Of course, the risk of infection is never fully eliminated, but laser lipo is a safe, cutting-edge procedure that improves skin’s appearance.

If you want to see what superior results laser liposuction can provide for you, contact our Worcester, MA office online or by phone today.

The Science Behind Botox

Botox is an FDA-approved solution for eliminating fine lines and wrinkles that start to show as we age. It can also be used to treat other conditions from spinal discomfort to excessive blinking! But what exactly is Botox, and how does it work?

Botox is the commercial name and abbreviation for a drug produced from a toxin called Botulinum toxin. It’s a protein — more specifically, a neurotoxin — produced by a bacterium. When injected into select muscle groups in the face, it interacts with a neurotransmitter to paralyze or “freeze” the muscles that cause wrinkles or folds.

While the term “neurotoxin” might sound scary, the Botox prescription formula is completely safe and FDA-approved. An experienced professional like Dr. Willis at New England Laser Lipo administers it in small, concentrated doses only to the areas that need treatment.

Botox is inserted into what are referred to as “dynamic” areas, like between the eyebrows or around the nose and eyes. Unlike dermal fillers, which is an injection of collagen under the skin, Botox is injected directly into the muscles that cause wrinkles. This results in smoother skin lasting anywhere from three to six months, and most patients report minimal swelling or redness.

The reason you might not see the effects right away is because the protein needs time to work in the muscles it’s targeting. Just like other molecules traveling through the body, the body has to recognize the protein and react to it, a process which can take a few days. Most patients report seeing results soon after treatment, but everyone’s body is different.

The body also will eventually metabolize Botox, so the effects will gradually begin to fade. Fortunately, this does not cause the wrinkles or fine lines to return any deeper than they were before treatment. Dr. Willis will work with you to create a customized treatment plan to keep your youthful look.

Botox® is administered by Dr. Willis at New England Laser Lipo in Shrewsbury, MA. Dr. Willis is here to answer your questions and design a treatment plan that helps you maintain a youthful look. Call 855.639.5273 or schedule an appointment online today.
